THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF WILL MAKING

Making a will is an important thing to do and it is something that will guarantee you both peace of mind and ensure that your personal wishes for your property and possessions are carried out after your death.

Many people do not make a will assuming that everything they own will automatically transfer to their partners or children. Should you not leave a will you lose the choice of how your assets are distributed, this in turn could lead to expensive complications and distress for those you leave behind.

A will is a positive and only way of making sure that the people and good causes you care about are supported after you have gone. If you do not have a family and die without a will in place, your estate automatically goes to the Crown.

Any legacy left to HAPPA as part of your estate is exempt from inheritance tax. There are three main types of legacies: Pecuniary, Specific and Residuary.

A Pecuniary Will bequest is a fixed sum of money specifically assigned to HAPPA.

A Specific Will bequest is the giving of an item; this could be art, jewellery, property but not money.

A Residuary Will is the one of most common types of will. Family and friends form the main legatees named in the will, with the residue of the estate divided amongst one or more charities who will then receive a percentage of the estate.

HAPPA is able to provide you with a legacy booklet which is a guide to all forms of legacies and should you wish to consider leaving a legacy to HAPPA we would invite you to complete the pledge form in the booklet and return it to us. This information is confidential but enables us to know of your intentions and can help us to plan for the future.

Should you choose to remember HAPPA in your will you might find the following wording suggestions useful.

I give (%) of the residue of my estate absolutely and free from all duties and taxes to Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA), registered charity number 1085211 of Taylor Building, Shores Hey Farm, Black House Lane, Briercliffe, Burnley, Lancs, BB10 3QU for its general purposes and the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer of HAPPA shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
