HAPPA Chairman asks for your support to prevent animals travelling long distances to be slaughtered for meat (photo courtesy of ILPH) HAPPA donate £2,000 to ILPH to support this campaign
Once again we are receiving reports of horses travelling long distances from Poland, Rumania, Spain, Lithuania and Belarus to Italy to be slaughtered for meat. EU Members states have accepted regulations to consol the way that these horses have to be transported to their final destination; these regulations are being flouted on a daily basis. HAPPA can see no reason why these horses can not be humanly destroyed in their country of origin thus alleviating all the unnecessary suffering that is being caused by the present system. Surely there is more profit in a wagon load of carcasses than a wagon load of live horses. Horses in Great Britain enjoy the protection of the Minimum Values Legislation but we hear that they may lose that protection after 2012. Our colleagues at the ILPH are at this moment organising a campaign to present to the EU Commission for the Animal Health & Welfare. We fully endorse their campaign and therefore invite you our members to write to Marcos Kyprianou Member of the EU Commission, Rue de la Loi. 200 B-1049 Brussels, Belgium and to your local MP voicing your objection to the flouting of EU regulation (EC) 1/2005. Thank you for your support. Ken Cranage Chairman << back |
