Horse Passports - Information

Following a recent announcement by the Government all equines will need to have a full passport identification document by the end of June 2004.

This includes all horses, ponies, donkeys and mules irrespective of their status (companion, hack, competition, animal, etc).

In respect of the cost, this is up to the individual Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO's) to set. The BHS is fully aware of the financial implications particularly those individuals and yards which face registering a large number of animals, concessions are set out in the tables which can be viewed by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

For those equines that are perhaps of unknown breeding but are a particular type or colour they may be eligible to register with a society aimed at that type of equine, one of the coloured societies or competition societies for example.

If your horse is of unknown origin and not eligible to be registered with such a society you can register with one of those that take those of unknown breeding such as BEF, SHB (GB), NPS and BHS. The BHS will be issuing passports from September 2002.

It would be advisable for those who require a passport for any equine to apply to the relevant PIO as early as possible. For those with large numbers it may be worth considering applying for passports to be issued per month, in order to spread the cost.

BHS application forms are now available and if you would like to receive one or more, then please send an A4 stamped addressed envelope to:
The BHS, Equine Passports, Stoneleigh Deer Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, CV8 2XZ.
