Equine Influenza

Know the signs, isolate immediately.

In light of the recent Equine Influenza outbreak we are advising horse owners to be on high alert and recognise the early signs and symptoms of any new cases. After several outbreaks have been confirmed in Yorkshire and Cheshire in vaccinated horses, we urge owners to take relevant safety precautions to minimise the risk and safeguard the health and welfare of our horses. The flu virus is airborne and therefore has the potential to spread quickly.

If your horse is suddenly off colour or displays any of the signs and symptoms listed below, isolate the equine immediately and seek veterinary advice.

Signs and symptoms;

  • Nasal Discharge
  • High Temperature
  • Poor Appetite
  • Cough
  • Lethargy
  • Conjunctivitis – or redness around the eyes

Please be aware that vaccinated horses can still be affected and suspected cases should be isolated immediately as the disease is highly contagious. Infected horses particularly the young or elderly more at risk of developing complications such as pneumonia and possibly resulting in death.
