Current Vacancies

We are searching for competent individuals that would like to make a difference to the lives of neglected, abuse and unwanted equines. Positions available:

· Full Time Position (Permanent Contract) Working 42.5 hours per week by rota basis, 8am-4.30pm and night checks 8.30-9pm. Minimum/Living Wage.

The successful candidates will have sufficient horse husbandry skills and experience to offer high standards of care to resident equines and will demonstrate an understanding of the specific needs of equines on a rehabilitation programme.

The Charity is looking for experienced equine handlers/competent riders with sound stable management skills, the ability to communicate confidently, and, work supportively with work colleagues and the general public.

Applicants for full time positions must have BHS Stage 1 Ride or Care, equivalent qualification or experience.

Weekend Kitchen Assistant

12hours

£4.81 – £9.50 per hour

Our popular café is looking for a Kitchen Assistant to help the Chef and other kitchen staff to meet the rising customer numbers. The Kitchen Assistant will be responsible primarily for keeping the kitchen and serving areas clean and tidy. On occasion they may be asked to do basic salad preparation and plating of dishes to company specification.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Maintaining kitchen cleanliness by keeping dishwasher area clean and clear throughout service
  • Ensuring all cutlery and crockery is clean and available when needed with no breakages
  • Setting up the serving area ready for service
  • Helping FOH staff to clear plates
  • Following guidance on Food safety and hygiene
  • Emptying bins and recycling when required
  • Sweeping and mopping kitchen area.
  • Any other deep cleaning duties as requested by the Café Manager or Duty Chef
  • Basic food preparation and plating following Café Manager or Chefs instructions

We provide on-site training, uniform and 10% discount across site. For the right candidate, this position could develop into an apprenticeship to gain qualifications whilst working.

Customer Service Assistant – The Fussy Filly Tack Shop

30 hours per week (Rota basis)

An exciting era for HAPPA (Horses and Ponies Protection Association) has resulted in a new role in the Charity’s shop The Fussy Filly, based at Shores Hey Farm, in Burnley.

The Farm is open daily to visitors and The Fussy Filly forms part of the overall visitor experience.

The Fussy Filly is proud of its selection of new and second-hand equestrian items and farm themed toys and gifts. Every purchase supports HAPPA’s mission of ‘Giving a Second Chance to Neglected, Abused and Unwanted Equines.

Apprentice Chef – The Café at Shores Hey Farm

30-40 Hours Per Week (Rota Basis)

Here at The Café at Shores Hey Farm, we have an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Chef to join us as an Apprentice, you’ll become part of our friendly close-knit team based at Shores Hey Farm, Burnley, Lancashire.

About Us

The Café is owned by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (registered charity in England and Wales). All funds raised through café purchases go back into the Charity. The Café has a thriving trade, five-star food hygiene rating, and excellent foodie reviews.

The Apprenticeship

This exciting opportunity will enable you to gain experience in all areas of the kitchen whilst working towards a Level 2 and/or Level 3 catering qualification.

As an Apprentice Chef, you’ll assist the team in food preparation and production and menu development, as well as helping to keep the kitchen clean, tidy, and organised.

You will work between 30 to 40 hours a week and your college time will be included in these, working 5 days per week including some weekends. Your college assessor will come to the cafe to support you and you will be required to go to college on day release.

Once you have completed your qualification with Nelson and Colne College, there is lots of opportunity to continue to progress with us, including further study and/or full-time employment as a chef.

Our opening hours are generally 10am until 3.30pm. We occasionally open on a Friday evening for a theme night, these are worked on a rota basis.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Following all relevant legal guidelines

  • Attending College on a regular weekly basis
  • Following instructions from the Lead Chef and Café Manager
  • Following company specifications regarding portion control and plating specification.

This is a marketing-based position with an emphasis on Centre based equine promotions. To provide high quality imagery for the use of publications, equine adverts and any other marketing material that would enable the growth of the Charity. The imagery would need to reflect the brand, the equines and the work being carried out at the Centre. An experienced equine handler with sound equine skills and the ability to communicate confidently and work closely, and supportively, with other work colleagues and the general public.
