At HAPPA, we are deeply grateful for the dedication and support of our volunteers. Their unwavering commitment plays a crucial role in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses and ponies in need. Today, we are delighted to share a heartfelt case study from one of our remarkable volunteers, whose journey with HAPPA has not only made a significant impact on our organisation but has also profoundly enriched her own life.

Gail Hardman-Carr has been a steadfast supporter of HAPPA for many years. From her initial visit to Shores Hey Farm to her ongoing contributions, Gail’s experience represents the spirit of volunteerism and the transformative impact it can have on both the individual and the organisation.

‘’I’ve lived in this area my entire life, and one day, while my car was being serviced, my partner and I saw a sign for HAPPA and decided to check it out. When I saw the horses and learned about their stories, I was immediately hooked. From that moment, I became a regular visitor. Although HAPPA wasn’t allowing volunteers to help with the horses at that time, I spent my visits talking to and stroking them, feeling a deep connection and desire to contribute.

When I first visited HAPPA, I was accompanied by my partner, Geoff. Unfortunately, a few months after we began visiting, Geoff was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite his diagnosis, we continued to visit HAPPA. Geoff would sit in the Café while I spent time with the horses. After his passing in March 2018, HAPPA became a sanctuary for me. I found solace in being there every day, spending time with the horses, which helped me through my grief. I joined a bereavement group and made new friends, introducing them to the comforting environment of HAPPA.

HAPPA is located in beautiful countryside, making each visit a joy. Witnessing the horses’ rehabilitation and progress is incredibly fulfilling. The staff are friendly and always eager to share updates about the horses. Seeing the horses recover and find new homes resonates deeply with me, aligning with my passion for animal welfare.

Through my volunteer work, I’ve met Andy, a fellow member of the bereavement group, and we’ve enjoyed contributing to HAPPA together. We’ve painted the toilets, stables, arena, and picnic benches. Andy has even played Father Christmas for fundraising events. I take pride in making the surroundings more welcoming by planting hanging baskets and grooming the horses. Our efforts have enhanced the environment for both visitors and the equines.

In my retirement, I’ve been able to dedicate more time to HAPPA. Volunteering here gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment. I feel that my efforts make a difference and that I’m contributing positively to the community.

Winning the Admiral Memorial Trophy was an unforgettable moment for me. It was completely unexpected and filled me with immense joy. This recognition affirmed the value of my contributions and motivated me to continue giving my best.

My love for the horses drives my ongoing commitment to HAPPA. The joy I feel when visiting the site and seeing the positive impact of my work keeps me dedicated. The beautiful setting and the supportive atmosphere are constant motivators.

Balancing my volunteer work with other aspects of my life is seamless because of the pleasure I derive from it. The serene setting of HAPPA and the companionship of the horses make every visit worthwhile. My commitment to the horses and the satisfaction of contributing to their welfare make volunteering a priority in my life.

For anyone considering volunteering with HAPPA, I would say that you will find a welcoming and friendly community here. The atmosphere is supportive, and everyone works together for the benefit of the horses. It’s a rewarding experience that I highly recommend.

Volunteering with HAPPA has been a transformative journey for me. From finding solace after personal loss to contributing to the well-being of the horses and the organisation, every moment has been enriching. I look forward to continuing my involvement and witnessing more positive outcomes for the horses and the community.’’

Thank you, Gail, for your unwavering commitment and passion. Your story is a shining example of the difference one person can make in the lives of animals in need.
