Our newborn foal is already winning hearts with us at HAPPA, after arriving safely to rescued mum Sugar.

With his wobbly legs, bright personality and early hints of a victory lap, Kane has quickly become our newest little star. We chose his football-inspired name as a cheerful tribute to his mum, Sugar, and to the excitement surrounding England’s summer on the world stage.

We found his mum, Sugar, a young two-year-old filly, abandoned while she was already in foal. Her story makes his safe arrival even more special to us, marking a hopeful new chapter for both mare and foal after a difficult start.

Kane is already proving popular with our visitors and supporters, who have been delighted by his timely arrival, his proud mum’s story, and the feel good football connection. His name has brought smiles across our yard and given us an extra reason to cheer during World Cup fever, although, for now, his main goal is staying upright.

“We wanted a name that reflected the excitement everyone is feeling during the World Cup, and after consulting our supporters on social media, Kane immediately came to mind and matched his mum perfectly,” said Amanda Berry, Head of Equine Operations. “After everything Sugar has been through, seeing her safely care for her foal is incredibly moving. He is a strong, lively colt with lots of character, and while we cannot promise he will score any goals, he has certainly won everyone over already.”

His arrival also gives us a welcome opportunity to highlight the care, dedication and around-the-clock work that goes into supporting rescued mares and foals. We will continue to monitor Sugar and Kane closely as he grows, develops, and takes his first careful steps towards a healthy future, no offside decisions required.

We invite supporters to follow Kane’s progress, share his story, and send well wishes as he settles into life at our yard. Kane will soon be available as a sponsorship horse for football fans and equine lovers alike. Donations towards Sugar and Kane’s ongoing care will help us provide the specialist attention every rescued mare and foal needs, from veterinary checks and farrier visits to nutritious feed, safe bedding, and daily hands-on care. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us give Sugar, Kane, and other rescued equines the second chance they deserve.
