Inside HAPPA’s Feel-Good Season of Ponies, Picnics & Proper Family Days Out

If your idea of a perfect summer includes fresh air, muddy wellies, an ice cream within reach and the unmistakable swish of a pony’s tail, make room in your diary: Shores Hey Farm in Briercliffe is shaping up to be one of Burnley’s happiest destinations from July through to September.

At HAPPA (the Horses and Ponies Protection Association), we have lined up a season of hands-on equine encounters, family-friendly events and little adventures that feel wonderfully old-school, in the best way. Better still, every ticket and trail supports our work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses and ponies.

Your summer shortlist and why you’ll want to come back twice

  •  The can’t-miss headline event this summer: Festival of the Horse (29th August, 11 am – 4 pm) Our annual celebration of all things equine brings demonstrations, expert talks and plenty to keep curious minds, busy hands and fidgety feet entertained.
  • Summer Family Party (18th July, 4 pm – 9 pm) A summer celebration marking the start of the school holidays, featuring live entertainment, pony activities, games, food, fundraising stalls and community fun for all ages.
  • For little explorers: Pirate Treasure Trail (18th July – 31st August, 11 am – 4 pm) Follow the clues, crack the code and help Pirate Pony and crew open their treasure chest – an interactive themed trail that turns a day out into a mini quest.
  • Up close with the herd: Pony Grooming Sessions (Tuesdays: 21st & 28th July; 2nd, 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th August, 11 am – 3 pm) For ages 4+, this is a gentle, confidence-boosting introduction to equine life: meet a horse, learn about the kit and discover the calm that comes with a good grooming brush.
  • Build confidence: Pony Taster Days (8th & 27th August, 10 am – 12 pm or 1 pm – 3 pm) A gentle, two-hour pony experience designed for beginner and nervous children aged 4+. Build confidence, meet ponies and enjoy a calm introduction to pony care.
  • Small riders, big grins: Pony Rides (1st August, 1 pm – 2:30 pm) A safe, supervised taste of the saddle for children and young people – short, sweet and made for memory-making.
  • Learn by doing: Own a Pony Day (22nd & 25th July; 5th, 19th & 22nd August, 10 am – 3 pm) A deeper dive for ages 6–16, covering daily care, stable know-how and the kind of bond that only happens when you spend real time together.
  • Confidence with a lead rope: Pony Maze (24th July & 28th August, 1 pm – 2:30 pm) For ages 6+, lead a pony through a simple maze while learning the basics of communication, guidance and trust.
  • For the show-lovers: HAPPA In-Hand Show (30th August) A friendly, family-centred show with a range of classes, rosettes up for grabs and extra games to keep the day light and lively.
  • Bring the dog: Woof Shack (5th July, 2nd August & 6th September, 11 am – 12:30 pm) A relaxed social for dogs and their humans – expect new pals and plenty of tail wags.
  • A peek behind the scenes: Supporters’ Day (12th August & 20th September, 10 am – 3 pm) For members, sponsors, donors and volunteers, this event includes talks, demos and an exclusive look at the work that happens beyond the visitor areas, with time for questions and team meet-and-greets.

More than a day out: linger for lunch, browse, and make it a proper outing

Between activities, there’s the kind of pause that turns a quick visit into a mini break. Our HAPPA Café is open daily from 9 am to 3:30 pm, with late nights until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays – ideal for refuelling while the kids compare their favourite ponies.

And if you’re the sort who can’t leave without a souvenir, our HAPPA Direct Shop is stocked with gifts, toys and equestrian essentials, mixing brand-new finds with pre-loved bargains.

Dog-friendly all summer

Yes, your dog is welcome too. Water bowls, shaded rest spots and cooling mats are dotted around the Farm, so four-legged visitors can enjoy the day as comfortably as everyone else.

The evolution of equine welfare

For a quieter moment, step into our HAPPA museum, open all summer. It’s a surprisingly absorbing snapshot of how equine welfare has changed over time, tracking the legislation and landmark moments that have shaped our 89-year mission to give neglected, abused and unwanted equines a second chance.

Stay overnight at Shores Hey Farm

Fancy stretching the countryside feeling a little longer? On selected dates, we also offer peaceful, secure overnight stays for campervans and motorhomes at Shores Hey Farm – perfect if you’re travelling through Lancashire or turning an event visit into a relaxed stopover.

Whether you’re here for a single afternoon or a slow-paced night under the stars, your visit helps fund our day-to-day care and long-term rehabilitation work.

For further information and to book an overnight stay, visit the ‘Overnight campervan stays’ page on our website.

Free entry for HAPPA Members and Sponsors

Regulars have a smart hack: our HAPPA Members and Sponsors enjoy free entry to Shores Hey Farm all year round, ideal if you know you’ll be back for more pony time. To join, look for the ‘Become a member’ section on our website.

HAPPA’s Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Arthur, says: “This summer is shaping up to be one of our best yet. Every visit and event helps us raise awareness of our mission while offering families a unique way to connect with horses and ponies. With the museum and overnight stays now on offer, there is so much more opportunity for people to become involved in HAPPA’s world. I’m so excited to welcome new and returning visitors to Shores Hey Farm – there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
