Upon receiving a concerning report about an overweight pony and an owner facing health challenges, our dedicated Equine Inspector promptly intervened. Upon arrival, it was evident that the pony’s condition extended beyond weight issues – overgrown hooves and severe timidity were also apparent. Sadly, the owner was unable to provide the necessary care, and it became clear that the pony’s future was uncertain.

Transported to our Shores Hey Farm, the pony, named Spirit, initially showed signs of progress. However, her deeply ingrained fear and defensive behaviour posed significant challenges. Despite the tireless efforts of our Equine Care Team over six months, Spirit’s behaviour continued to deteriorate. A close call with our veterinarian underscored the severity of the situation – Spirit’s unpredictable nature posed a serious risk to staff safety.

With heavy hearts, but with the full support of our compassionate veterinarian, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanise Spirit. Despite our unwavering efforts, her ingrained behaviours proved insurmountable, and ensuring the safety of both humans and animals was paramount.
Though Spirit’s journey ended tragically, her story serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for continued support and advocacy for equine welfare. Your ongoing support enables us to provide care and compassion to horses like Spirit, ensuring their well-being and safety in the face of adversity.
