HAPPA Velma arrived at the safety of Shores Hey Farm alongside a Chestnut Mare named Daphne. Both came in because of a complaint from a concerned member of the public, both were found loose on the road suffering with some degree of lameness. The poor pair looked very bedraggled with matted manes and tails covered in sticky buds uncomfortably weighing them down.

The pair were seized under The Control of Horses Act 2015 after no owners came forward, they were both signed into HAPPA’s care by the local Police. Sadly, the Chestnut was chronically lame and X rays revealed severe deformities in her forelimbs on Veterinary advice we had to end her suffering. A very sad loss.

Velma was initially very nervous and difficult to handle in her stable – she was monitored carefully by our trained staff, and we continued to rehabilitate her with the hope of her turning a corner, she also had some lameness issues that needed more investigations. Sadly, a few months after her intake it was discovered that she was almost blind in both eyes and her lameness hadn’t improved, her behaviour became immediately more defensive. On Veterinary advice we put her to sleep to also end her suffering. A very sad ending for Velma and her companion, not one that we had hoped for. The staff had done their upmost for both and drew comfort from the fact that in their final days, they were both given the very best of care. Sometimes welfare can be tough, and, in this instance, we had to put the horses needs first.
