Who’s Percy Pig

Percy the Shetland pony, rescued by the charity Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) in 2022, is pleasing crowds across Lancashire and proving that despite a terrible start in life, this rescue pony can turn his hoof to anything.

Percy arrived at HAPPA, Shores Hey Farm, in an awful state. Rescued from a confined area in dreadful living conditions. Percy was extremely overweight, had a lice infestation, and had overgrown hooves. This little Shetland received all the specialist care needed to make a full recovery from his ordeal. The Equine Care Team knew he was destined for wonderful things.

How’s Percy Now?

Now fully rehabilitated, this adorable little pony is bringing festive joy to the local community in Burnley and across Lancashire by appearing at Christmas themed events. Recently being the star of the show in the Charity’s own fashion show, Percy continued to delight the crowds by visiting Readstone United grassroots football team, appearing at Simonstone St Peter’s School’s Christmas Nativity, and this weekend Percy will be gracing Santa with his presence at HAPPA’s very own Festive Weekend.

Percy’s support team includes Education & Engagement Manager Kelly Palmer, who says, “At the beginning, we did not know what Percy’s future would hold, we think he had spent an exceedingly long time on his own hence, he was a challenge to manage at first. However, he knew his destiny was to entertain the crowds and very quickly became everyone’s friend, enjoying being the star of the show. He truly is incredibly special and loves being in the limelight. He shone at the football team meet and greet, playing football himself, then went on to be the star of the show at a local school, he really is not just any Shetland.”

Sponsorship Scheme

Percy joined the Charity’s sponsorship scheme earlier this year, and due to his character, he quickly became a hit with all visitors and HAPPA supporters. Percy also helps on educational days to teach the next generation of pony enthusiasts how to correctly care for horses and ponies. Now the Charity is wondering, ‘Is there no end to his talents?’

Percy will stay with the Charity for the near future to continue to entertain his fans, educate the next generation of horse owners, and develop his hidden talents. HAPPA are encouraging visitors to come along and see this special little pony at Shores Hey Farm, or contact them at education@happa.org.uk if you would like Percy to make an appearance at your event, school, or gathering. After all, Percy is not just a Shetland Pony, he is HAPPA’s Shetland Pony!
