We Will Remember Kady
At the beginning of October, you may remember that we successfully rescued two abandoned Thoroughbreds, known as Kady and Ace.
Over the past few weeks, the equine team have been working extremely hard with both Kady (21-year-old mare) and Ace (6-year-old stallion), trying to make a start on their journey to health and happiness, despite all that has been thrown at them. This has taken a lot of extra love and care from the team, who have made it their mission to give them a second chance.
Kady was chronically lame on arrival and needed immediate veterinary investigations and X- rays. The results of the x-rays showed no evidence of disease and revealed poor foot conformation with very thin soles. Kady made steady progress whilst in isolation and the plan was to go on to begin remedial shoeing to lift her heels and take the pressure off the soles of her feet.
Unfortunately, Kady did not make the recovery we had hoped for, she developed a nasty abscess, which caused her to become extremely lame and uncomfortable overnight, the vet was called, and the abscess was drained and poulticed, with the hope of giving her some relief.
Unfortunately, after several days of treatment, there was no improvement and Kady was in a lot of pain and discomfort. She was lying down a lot and couldn’t weight bear on the affected limb at all. She was on maximum pain relief. At this point it was no longer ethical to continue and she was humanely put to sleep on Monday 28th October by the vet.
The team were by her side every step of the way and were with her to the very end, the bond that formed between them was remarkable. Kady was such a gentle, sweet, special mare that touched every team member. They were willing her to survive.
Kady didn’t deserve to be abandoned and forgotten and left on a remote fell to survive alone. Thankfully HAPPA stepped in and with the support and backing from RoR (Retraining of Racehorses), were able to end her suffering together under the vulnerable horse scheme. Kady spent her last few days in a comfortable stable, surrounded by love and kindness and people who cared.
We are devastated at the loss of Kady; she made a big impact on the team for the short while she was at Shores Hey Farm, along with Ace. She got her second chance, sadly not with the outcome we had all hoped for, however, we are honoured that we could make her last days special.
RIP Kady we will remember you, you are now free of pain, sleep tight sweet mare.
